What to do when someone dies. Government Advice and signposting

There are 2 things you MUST DO when someone dies ;

1) Get a medical certificate from a GP or hospital doctor. You will need this to register the death.

2) You MUST Register the death within 5 days (Note, this is NOT 5 WORKING Days - it includes weekends and Bank Holidays, in my mums case she died on a Friday, we got the certificate late on the Friday, that left us 2 days to register her death - the Monday and Tuesday of the following week only).

Once you have registered the death you will then get the documents you need for the funeral. Government Advice can be found at https://www.gov.uk/when-someone-dies

Remember there is no legal obligation to use a Funeral Director to plan and organise a funeral. Many will assist you if you choose to plan and organise a funeral yourself or wish to 'mix and match' by planning and executing some aspects yourself, perhaps supported by a funeral director or End of Life Doula , Soul Doula or Soul Midwife. Please get in touch if you would like to talk through your options.
